Thomas R. Gingeras

Professor of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, former vice president of Affymetrix Company. Authors, teachers and lecturers, who have published more than 160 papers in numerous scientific journals. The cited author of the top 1% of articles in the past four years. Now he is the director and professor of functional genomics at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
Thomas Gingeras and his colleagues studied where and how functional information is stored in the genome. These efforts help explain the biological and clinical effects of disease-causing gene mutations in humans and other organisms. Gingeras is the leader of the ENCODE (ENCyclopedia for DNA elements) and mouseENCODE and modENCODE (Model Genome ENCODE) projects at the National Institutes of Health.
His research has changed our understanding of the boundaries of traditional genes, revealing that almost all genomes, from bacteria to human organisms, can be transcribed into RNA (universal transcription)，and most RNA products made by cells are not destined to be translated into proteins (non-coding or ncRNA).
